Transport Telematics: Arc Transistance
Seamless Localised Roadside Assistance Across Europe
At the recent ITS Congress & Exhibition in Bilbao, ARC Transistance showed its ARC-DX (ARC Data Exchange) roaming mechanism in action. A car equipped with three different Telematics devices originating and registered from three different countries, Germany, Italy and Spain (the local one), driving in Bilbao, proved able to receive localised roadside assistance service with the same standard of quality; ‘at a single push of a button’. The benefit is simple: borders are no longer barriers for the provision of service for the ARC Transistance pan-European network of automobile clubs. Wherever the user is located in Europe, he/she will receive service the same way as at home. This is true for cars equipped with a Telematics device, but also for any other type of devices that can be located (new smart phone or PDAs).
Following a prototype development last year by two of their sister clubs, a group of ARC Transistance automobile clubs got together to develop delivery of seamless localised cross border services between themselves ñ these covered roadside assistance, other services and traffic information. The outcome was the ARC-DXÆ concept. This has been designed to allow any participating organisations freedom of choice for their own customers and allow the maximum flexibility for the introduction of new services. Essentially the ARC-DX is a set of information standards that collectively allow the transmission of Telematics information between co-operating organisations.
“It is a real breakthrough, not as much in technical terms, because there is a long time that roaming exists for GSM and SMS delivery, but rather in terms of benefits for the users. It brings them peace of mind. Many users buy a Telematics unit for safety or security reasons. These users do not need to worry about breaking down in a foreign country anymore. If they need roadside assistance, anywhere in Europe, ARC Transistance is able to provide it first class seamlessly as if they were in their home country” commented Bernhard Labudek, Chief Executive Officer, ARC Transistance S.A.
With the ARC-DX, as new services are introduced, the standardised applications are amended and issued to the participating organisations, ensuring that consistency is maintained throughout the network. Also, from a technical perspective, additional organisations and territories may be included in the network without disruption to existing operations.
ARC Transistance manages a network of service providers, mainly automobile clubs, covering the territory of Europe. Each of them is committed to and recognised as delivering the highest standard of quality in roadside assistance and traffic & mobility related services in their country.
